Cointap is bringing Bitcoin to the Walmarts and 7-Elevens Author: Ivan Raszl

One of the several new interesting bitcoin startup companies presented at Mediabistro’s Las Vegas Inside Bitcoins conference wasCoinTap.

The Canadian company aims to bring bitcoin into supermarkets, cold stores, gas stations and cafes in the form of a gift card. The plastic card can be bought in various dollar denominations just like an iTunes card and can be redeemed on the company’s website. The objective is to make purchasing bitcoins easier than ever.

CoinTap was giving away cards on the conference with small denominations so I could try it out. The web interface was easy to understand and use. There are two options to generate bitcoins from the dollar credit available on the card. You can either buy BTC instantly for a slightly higher rate than the average market price or you can use the exchange direct option in which case the system will try to buy your BTC at the lowest possible price from several exchanges. I used the first option and the whole process took less than 5 minutes and the BTC was immediately available to be transferred to a bitcoin wallet.
